In the weeks leading up to Christmas, Mr. Ville had only three things on his wishlist. And when you say it like that, it doesn't sound like much... pretty simple wishlist, right? Sure, except that the three things that were on it were a Playstation, a Nintendo Wii, and an Xbox 360. He often shortened this to "Playstation Wii-60," as in, "So where are you keeping my Playstation Wii-60 hidden?"
Riiiiiiiight.
I knew of a few other things he'd enjoy, even if it hadn't occurred to him yet, and one of those things was a bird feeder. I spent quite a bit of time going over all available feeders at the Wild Bird Center before I settled on a clear model that suctioned to the window. This would allow us to watch the birds without having to stand at the window all of the time, so we wouldn't miss a thing.
(You know, re-reading that last sentence, it occurs to me that we could both use a hobby... or a life... or both. But, I digress.)
Anyway, he put that thing up shortly after Christmas, filled it with bird seed, and waited.

And waited.
And waited.
And threatened to move it somewhere where the birds would notice it.
And had, in general, no faith whatsoever.
But I knew, I KNEW, that sooner or later, SOME bird would figure it out. And on Wednesday, a couple of them finally did - and he took probably a hundred or more pictures of the goofy bastards.

Look at all the pretty birdy's... i should get a feeder like that and put it by the window my cat sleeps in... :) it could become very interesting
Those pictures rock. I tend to forget how cool birdfeeders are until someone else gets one and reminds me. I'm heading to the store for one tomorrow!
Just wait 'til the hawks and the owls and the cats figure it out, too...
Cracking set of tasty birds.
Bird feeders never worked very well for us because our retarded cats would hang out by the nearest window and freak out any birds that got too close.
We had better luck with hummingbird feeders. Actually, screw the feeders, we had better luck with pots of flowers on our porch. Hummingbirds are freaky when you encounter them up close. One of those things got up in my grille one time when I was watering the flowers. It was like watching a missile that froze in the air just before it hit you. I was tempted to slap it out of the air, but I knew I didn't have a chance so I just blew on it and it took off.
Nature sure is strange.
Those are awesome bird pictures. I've never been able to get any decent ones, except for a few lucky shots of the bluebird family that sets up shop in our backyard every spring.
Next year, you ought to get him a bluebird house- and I just happen to know someone who can make one for you- just as soon as he gets some wood to make one for Scarlet and Jackie.
It ain't no Playstation 3, mind you, but bluebirds are really fun to watch.
Manda - We put this one on a window that was high enough to eliminate any cat problems. It's actually suctioned to the very top of the window. But that's probably less fun than having one accessible to cats. ;)
Marc - I was pretty amazed at all the different options available now (of course, I don't get out much, either - especially not for bird-feeder-shopping). One of the models I was intrigued by, but decided against, was the in-house variety. Lots of variations on this one, but here's one example:
Chris - Yeah, it could get interesting. If it does, I'll take videos.
Allclick - Thanks, but... tasty?!
Erik - Hummingbirds are fun to watch, but damn, those bastards are quick. They don't hang out here in cold weather, so when it warms up I'll have to try to snap some hummingbird pics. Now that'll be interesting.
Elvis - Bluebirds rock. :) Also, he already HAD a playstation, AND an Xbox 360, and eventually got rid of them. He still has a Xbox here anyway. He just likes to collect consoles... and play them for a week, then they'll collect dust for the next year and a half. The birdhouse was a much better investment, not to mention just as fun. :)
Tasty is more of a compliment than a reflection of the actual taste lol It's a phrase from the 70's to describe a lovely looking group of ladies aka birds lol
Those birds are so cute. I may have to get a window feeder for my kitchen window. We have a real life PITA parakeet who we love very much. He'd probably like to see some other birds too.
Allclick - whew! I was going to say... there's more meat on a chicken, and they're much easier to catch. lol
ETW - You should totally do that, I bet he'd love the company!
