  1. Gchat status messages, explained: It's just a sleep study, but thanks for all the positive juju.

I'm having a polysomnogram done, and I'm actually really looking forward to it. Why? Because I get off on these kinds of personally scientific things. It all started when my high school AP Bio teacher let me type my own blood back in 11th grade. She created a bit of a monster, to say the least. I bought my own blood typing kit and forced my entire family to submit in the name of scientific curiosity, whether they felt like it or not (typically recessive, I'm the only O Negative in a family of five other O Positives). And then, because I had testing supplies left over, I branched out to cousins, grandparents, my siblings' significant others, people I'd just met, etc. It was fun while supplies lasted, and I'd buy another kit if there was anyone left I hadn't tested. (There isn't.)

So the prospect of getting to sleep overnight in the hospital while hooked up to various sensors and monitors is right up my alley. Think about it: out of all the things you can have done to you at a hospital, this one is definitely, by far, NOT the worst. It doesn't involve being cut open, stuck with needles, or violated in a bodily orifice (although that's not always bad). You just sleep.

The only thing that concerned me when I was reading over the paperwork is that I'm apparently expected to bring pajamas. I have, in my 26 years on this planet, purchased exactly one set of pajamas, and although I've worn them around the house and even to the store on occasion, I don't think I've worn them to bed even once. I had to dig them out of my closet. I move around a lot in my sleep, and pajamas just tend to get twisted around or bunched up and become more uncomfortable and/or dangerous than anything else. I briefly considered just not wearing them, until I got the part that talks about the audio and visual monitoring done by technicians while you sleep. Oh. Hmm. Guess not.

So anyway, no big deal. I expect it'll be fun. I plan on taking my laptop so I can document somewhat, and also so I can listen to Kitchen Confidential (again) on audiotape while I wait for everything to get rolling. It's an interesting book, that's for sure. If you like to cook, or like to eat out, or just like a good story, you need to get yourself a copy, stat. It's the only culinary memoir I've come across that reads more like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas; and, as everyone knows, that Anthony Bourdain is just dreamy.

Good luck, Jenny. I'll say a prayer to Batgirl for you.

As far as what goes in the hospital, I'd definitely opt for the polysomnogram over most of the other options. I hope all goes well for you.
