Remember last year, when I did the whole Jennyville Album of the Year thing? No? That's okay, because I'm bringing it up again. ;p
(I waited a few days to blog about this mainly because if I had tried to talk about it right away, I would have written a blog post comprised entirely out of the words "amazing," "mind-blowing," "awesome," and "holy shit." I would have also collapsed in awe, drooled all over my keyboard, and ended up shorting out my laptop. Safety first, kids.)
Saturday night I drove myself over to the Gravity Lounge in Charlottesville for the show. John Ashley was on first, and although any act preceding Scott's was destined to seem like an eternity, the kid wasn't bad. He's actually hilarious, and reminds me of Dave Matthews musically.
I totally lucked out and snagged a GREAT seat - front row, dead center, and a mere five feet away from Scott.

Need: something to fan myself with, STAT.
I was so close that I was able to read the setlist from my chair, and before Scott even came out I knew that this show was going to freaking ROCK - and man, did it ever. Scott started his set (solo) with Wasp In A Jar. This was the first time I'd heard this song, but it was incredible. As far as I can tell, this one hasn't been released yet, so I've been forced to play the YouTube video just to hear it - which I have been, obsessively. (Sorry about that, YouTube.)
After that, he brought out Danny Keane on cello. It was, at times, very Nick Drake with just the two instruments, though Scott did break out the Harmonica for Passing Stranger. Setlist from that (probably not in exact order, as I'm doing this from memory):
Eyes Wider Than Before
Fool's Fooling Himself
Dream Song
City Headache
Sweet Scented Figure
Elusive
Passing Stranger
Since I could read the setlist, I was nearly bouncing in my chair when it was time for Dream Song. (This is the song that started it all, the song I fell asleep listening to that first night, the iPod headphones still in my ears... and when I woke up in the middle of the night and realized it had stopped playing, I pushed play on the iPod, started it up again on repeat, and went back to sleep. To say I love that song would be a slight understatement.)
It was amazing to hear all of the songs that I'd been so used to from the album stripped down and reworked. I would have never believed, prior to the show, that these songs could be improved upon, but... wow. It was absolutely magnificent.
And as if all that wasn't awesome enough, I was talking to Danny after the show and he mentioned that they were thinking about coming back to the US in January (omg!) and are working on a new album (double omg!). Needless to say, I'll be in attendance at that next show, whenever it is, come hell or high water. ;)
So, if anyone's interested in checking out Scott Matthews, his debut album (Passing Stranger) is actually for sale on the US iTunes now. You can also listen to a few tunes on his MySpace. I can't recommend it enough.

I'm diggin' on his unplugged stuff on YouTube. I kinda like it better than the studio work, actually, but tonight is the first time I ever heard of the guy so it's a bit soon to make judgments. He's definitely severely, violently talented...
Oh, absolutely. That man can play a guitar like... I don't even know what. It's insane.
By the way, Scott is playing, for FREE, at the White Eagle Saloon in Portland on October 8th. It should just be Scott solo on guitar. I can assure you, the show is worth a hell of a lot more than free, so you'd definitely get your money's worth... you know, if you were interested. :)
Awesome! I'll have to check him out. I'm sans speakers right now... gah!
Ooh, ooh! He is teh awesomeness!!!! I mean, every song is just fabulous, with layers and layers of neat stuff going on. Thanks for tuning me in.
Okay, that's it. I'm coming over to your house and raiding your music collection. I don't know where you live. No matter, I'll just follow the sound of great music!
Oh, sweet! I'm so glad you liked it... he really is amazing, isn't he? *swoons
And thanks for getting me to get off my ass and finally check out Feist... I like Mushaboom, but that's all I've got so far. I'm working on your VAST mix, so hopefully I'll have more Feist eventually. ;)
You really must have no idea where I live, because it's at least 5 hours away. Please don't inflict that on yourself. I can mail you mix cds for, like, a buck. lol
Or... wait. I have an idea that just might be awesome. Hmmm.
