  1. Driving cross-country, Part 2: Kansas.

I have way too many pictures of Kansas... because there was nothing else to do for miles, and miles, and miles... and miles.

This was apparently Kansas' star attraction. They advertised it every couple of miles. (Not Jesus - he's pretty prominent there, but I was talking about the world's largest prairie dog and assorted menagerie.)

Oh, and we crashed a military base, too. We passed a sign for Fort Riley, and Joe was all "Want to stop by the fort?"
I, being a military n00b, was all "You can't just wander onto a base, can you?" Turns out, you can... if you have your military ID. That's why it pays to travel with ex-military (and also because they know how to kill anyone who bothers you with a single hand movement). Rock. Anyway, this photo was taken at the BaseMart, which was awesome - AND tax free!

And then a storm moved in, which livened things up a bit.

I have a series of crappy videos, too, edited together for your viewing pleasure... or not. Check out the newscast at the end.

I'm glad we didn't have to find out if the hail really was hen-egg-sized.

  2. Driving cross-country, Part 1: Random images from the road

They say everyone should drive across the country at least once, or so I'm told - and after this trip, I have to agree. It was long, and Kansas tested my will to live, and I could probably have slept a little more than I did, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. It was awesome. One word: TUMBLEWEEDS.

    First, some introductions:

My co-pilot, Joe (or, well, I guess I was Joe's co-pilot, really). Anyway, I've know Joe since he was a kid. Joe had to move himself out to Utah, stat, to set up shop with his fiance, Jenn. That's where I came in: I had vacation time that needed to be used soon, I had a valid driver's license, I didn't mind doing all that driving to see about a million places I'd never been before, and by god, I had a Nikon D50, and I (mostly) knew how to use it.

This is Joe's Rubicon, which we drove out to Utah. It's pretty badass.

We dropped my car off at Pittsburgh Airport, loaded my shit into the Jeep, hopped on I-70, and headed west.

    Ohio:

    Have Nikon, will travel.

Indiana: I quite liked the state itself; the section we drove through was nice... lots of farmland, rural, pretty... but Indianans, I could do without. They're growing their own brand of special out there. True story.

I wish we had more of Missouri, because I really liked this state quite a bit. Unfortunately, we drove through at night... hence...
